Column Topics

lantern A Look Back is a monthly feature column, 600-800 words, written by a journalist with more than 20 years of experience writing for weekly newspapers, magazines and other markets. This column shares fascinating bits of our American history and relates it to our 21st Century lives.

Some of the fascinating topics include:

What kind of terrorism did an 18th Century American Farmer face?

What was medicine like before there were doctors? What were some of the remedies they used in earlier times?

How did women make dinner every night without a modern kitchen?

How did a typical American farm family entertain themselves in the 1700s?

Death and burials. What were the rituals in the 1700s and how did they change through time?

    Mourning jewelry. What was it?

What did they do for light before electricity?

How did pioneers stay warm during the long, brutal winters?

Laundry, soapmaking, and keeping things clean. Was it as difficult then as we think?

How often did people bathe? What was considered good hygiene? How did they bathe?

Thanksgiving: The biggest Holiday of the Year. How was it celebrated?

How and when did Christmas become popular? How was it celebrated in early America?

Fashions of the times. What was considered "in," say, in 1776? Or in 1876?

How did people travel from town to town? What was a typical Inn like?

How did the women sew, weave, quilt, crochet? Was this a group effort?

The General Store. What did it sell? Where was it? Who shopped there, and how did it change over the years?

When did they start celebrating the Fourth of July as we know it?

The first Labor Day Parade. Who started it? Why?

Hunting through the ages. What did they hunt? Who did the hunting and what were the weapons they used?

Our old cemeteries and headstones. What do they tell us about our forefathers?

This column will prove that our American ancestors who lived during the 1700 and 1800s still have a lot to tell us about their unique way of life. Your readers will love these brief glimpses into their colorful past. Give them an escape from the daily headlines, with this fun and thoughtful column.
