A Look Back at M. Lee Conrad

headshot M. Lee Conrad Kemsley is a freelance writer with more than 20 years of experience as a journalist. Lee writes on a freelance basis in the areas of history, education, meditation and adoption. Her monthly column "A Look Back," takes a look at America in the 1700s and 1800s, and is syndicated in states across the country, such as Montana, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Lee's articles and essays have appeared in national magazines such as "Adoptive Families," "The Red Thread," "Simple Living," "Explore Magazine," and the "New England Journal."

Before becoming a fulltime freelance writer, Lee wrote and produced a cable television series for the State of Vermont focusing on education and employment issues. She also published a newsletter for the University of Vermont's School of Special Education.

Lee earned her Bachelors Degree in Journalism at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1979, and continued to work as a reporter, editor and information officer at newspapers throughout Tennessee until moving to San Francisco in the early 1980s.

While working toward her Masters in Writing at San Francisco's City College, Lee worked as a contract writer for a variety of business publications, nonprofits and specialty newsletters. Lee also worked as a Copy Editor for Matthew Bender Book Publishers in San Francisco and was Proofreader and Newsletter Editor for Pillsbury, Madison and Sutro Law Firm in San Francisco.

Lee moved with her husband and daughter to northern Vermont in 1992. When she is not writing, she is working on their 1863 farmhouse.
